LESSON #31 - Turning these lessons in to licks/chops for use in guitar solos Part III

Lesson Series by Todd Simpson

UPDATE: BOOTCAMP CHANGES:'
In case you have not heard, from now on BOOTCAMP is a "DEALERS CHOICE" type of thing. Some of these missions have 5 drills and are taking just way to long. You should be able to learn, practice and record a Mission in under an hour. That leaves in quite a bit of practice time for one given drill. So from now on, for each mission, pick one drill, if there is more than one, and use that for your Mission Vid. This will allow you more time to focus on a single drill rather than spreading it out among several. Of course, you can still make a vid with all of them if you like and I suggest every soldier learn them all, they are just not required for your Mission vid. Let me know if you have questions!!

Today we are going to work on some licks and once we get them up to speed, we are going to play them against a backing track instead of a metronome. This will hopefully give you better insight in to how these chops work with music as opposed to just by themselves.

These are "Strike Once Hammer Many" licks. So they start with a pick strike and then have several left hand only hammer on notes.

  • CRITICAL TIP: NONE of these Licks in this group of Missions with this backing really match the backing. That's right. The notes are in key, but the licks feel like you gotta stuff them in. You gotta force it to fit. That's the point of these. I want you to ignore your sense of timing, forget BPM, it's a solo not a math course. Stop thinking Soldier and feel your way through. There is no wrong way to play this. Express yourself in any way you feel led just play the notes as listed and it will work out.

*PICK ONLY ONE FOR YOUR MISSION VIDEO. YOU CAN DO MORE IF YOU WISH BUT ONLY ONE IS REQUIRED TO BADGE UP Video:
