  • Hi guys!

This time I've strapped on my armour and waded into battle with the guitar style of Iced Earth, which means we're looking at the guitar playing of founding member and chief songwriter, Jon Schaffer.

Iced Earth's musical style is influenced by many traditional heavy metal and NWOBHM groups such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. The most distinctive element of the band's sound is the stutter-like right-hand gallop of rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer - Wikipedia

This lesson will work on your alternate picking, down strokes, palm muting and your timing. All of these are essential ingredients of metal guitar playing.

Schaffer is a formidable rhythm guitarist. It requires much stamina and precision to replicate his riffs so I would advise you to tackle this in small sections at a much lower speed and gradually put the entire lesson together and play over a lower speed backing track first.

Recommended listening : Something Wicked This Way Comes, Alive in Athens or any other album, they all showcase the powerful guitar style that Iced Earth is known for.

    Enjoy!
