  • Hi GMC!

Welcome to my new lesson in the style of the Japanese Idol band called "Babymetal".

    Music Style:
The band describes their sound as kawaii metal (the term "kawaii" means "nice") and explain that it's a mix of j-pop with heavy metal. We can also head influences by Death Metal, Power Metal, Nu Metal, Speed Metal and off course a lot of J-pop. In this lesson I've tried to recreate the sound of their most popular and powerful songs, but also those that sound more modern to me. We can go for a second lesson covering their more "Power Metal" side if we receive enough requests.

    Tonality, Chord Progression & Scales:
They usually play on 7 strings guitars so most of their songs are in low tuning, being B (open 7th string) key the most used. For this lesson I've tuned my Gibson Les Paul in Drop B (I'm using D'Addario 013-062 strings) and composed a tune that combines B minor aeolian, B Blues Scale, E and B Phrygian Major. I've found that this two scales are the most used by them in songs and solos.

    Techniques:
In order to master this lesson, you'll need a precise rhythm playing and combine Only Downstrokes, with Alternate Picking and Palm Muting. The lesson is very fast so take your time to learn the riffs correctly and practice at slower tempos first.

    Sound:
I used Fractal Ax8's 5153 (Peavey 5150 emulation), Cubase 9.5 to record audio and midi, Superior Drummer 3 for drums and Trillian for bass.

    Tuning: Drop B
