Playing a wah pedal seems simple, and it can be - thats the beauty of it. All you have to do is tap your foot on the beat and you already have some interesting rhythmic effects going on. But you can do a lot more with a wah pedal using different combinations of foot tapings and rhythm syncopation.

Vai breaks the rules and shows us new playing possibilities. I composed this lesson using E pentatonic minor scale and E mixolidian scale, and I recorded it using a wah-wah effect.

This wah-wah solo can be found on my band Artifex's latest demo - a song called Alley Cats. It's cool because it revolves around a single riff in E. Because there aren't any chord changes to rely on - the solo needs other qualities than the harmonic ones. Therefore, I focused on crazy sounding wah-wah licks, rhythmic ideas and MIGHTY SLIPPERS . Once again, this is a way to make a cool solo without relying on strong chord notes. The solo reaches it's peak with an exotic/progressive sounding phrase which I play in unison with my drummer and bass player. In this lesson you will learn essential wah-wah tricks and licks.
