Could't help but groove to this!
i might have listen before! maybe i didn't realized how great lesson is this. Great riff! Thanks to GMC & Marcus
Thanks guys
Great riffing Marcus. Very cool
At first I did not like this, then I listened to it. Awesome! ;-)
Thanks guys By the way, that guitar is also one of my two faves, I just love it. Funny thing is, I got it by accident, actually I ordered a different model. I have been on tour in England when I got the call from Gibson that my guitar arrived, but that Gibson USA sent the wrong one (I originally wanted a Standard Premium Plus in desert burst, which is much darker). They told me though that I still might want to check it out and sent me a picture... 5 seconds later I called them and told them I would like to have that one
that is like my dream Gibson, very nice work!
wow, i love that mix from chords and single-notes!!! the riffing is very cool!
the solo sounds really grewat too!
this lesson will be one of the next things on my to-do-list!
thanks marcus!
Perfect riff lesson Marcus! Really nice work.
Thanks Sinisa
Powerful riffing i like it,cool lesson Marcus !!!
Hi Gary, nope that is "only" a standard premium plus, I still have to get class 5, I once saw a blue one that I really fell in love with
Super cool sounding heavy riffs Marcus! The maple wood on you LP is stunning, a real beauty. Is that a class 5?
Great lesson - cheers!
Thanks guys About my tone, of course everything you mentioned plays a role, plus the most important thing: my fingers!
I will write a bit about how I get my tone in my part of the forum, I think that is a more appropiate place to talk about it. And about changing pickups, don't be afraid, it is no big deal, and depending on what pickups you have in your guitar now you can improve your sound A LOT with better pickups. Check out my lesson about changing pickups if you are unsure about how to do it and feel free to ask me if anything is still unclear.
PS: yes, I used the auto-wah from the Axe-FX Ultra.
Amazing riffs Marcus! You nailed Morello style in this one! I love his style of riffing.
Good job!!
OMG!!!!hi Marcus, how are you getting that killer tone??? guitar-amp-or effects?? or all of the above? very cool tune bro! oh by the way is that some sort of auto-wah you are using for the solo?? excellent job Marcus!
Nice one Marcus, it does indeed sound like Morello, and your tone is awesome
Tom Morello is one of the reasons I picked up the guitar in the first place so I am very excited to see this lesson Marcus You did one heck of a job too, amazing lesson. I can see Tom bopping around on stage playing this and everything
LOVE IT!!! And love the EMG's in the Les Paul. I've been tossing around the idea of changing the pick ups in mine and I really love the tone you got with this lesson. But I'm a bit of a fraidy cat to mess with my LP
Thanks a lot everybody, yeah, I also think it is a good sign if you start to bang your head
Yes, since my last lesson (the right hand workout) I am only using the Axe-FX Ultra for all my recordings, amazing amp. Originally I bought it cause I wanted to have a good sounding and light backup for my live setup, but since we will only be touring again next year I decided to keep it here at home unitl then I never thought a modeling amp would get that close to my real amp.
The tone is amazing man! This is a very cool lesson with some useful stuff. Your precision in playing your rhythm stuff is always impressive. Is that the AxeFX?
great marcus, nice fat tone over there!
nice to meet you by the way!
Amazing lesson, Marcus! Sounds really well!
Great lesson Marcus you cover is style really well.... Bookmarked !
Great Lesson Marcus, you definitely captured Tom's style!!!
I started to headbang, which is a good sign - this lesson rocks
Great lesson and groove Marcus
Cool work partner! Great sound to! great job Marcus!
I never said you should sit still in front of your computers, feel free to bang your heads and jump around Good to hear that you enjoy this one, again it was a lot of fun for me
I doubt though that this will turn into a BG hit, our style is slightly different
And yes, a Les Paul with EMG's definitely rules
The sound of that les paul with the EMGs is just killer.....
Very nice riffs man! Awesome Will this be a new Blind Guardian hit?
cool!
I totally love this! You really nailed to tone for the solo!
Awesome lesson, defo got the Tom Morello feel to it
i dont know how you do it, but seems every lesson you produce is high qulity and will be very fun to learn. amazing lesson.
Wow I love the groove! You've nailed it man
Awesome riffs!
Yeeeah. That really grooves. Great, great lesson
So groovy that it's hard to sit still before the screen:)
Thanks guys
Perfect lesson Marcus!
Cool riffs
Great lesson Marcus! Tune is so groovy!
Awesome riffs and solo Marcus
Awesome topic/lesson Marcus I have always wanted to write this kinds of groovy Morello riffs. I am going to give it a new shot - thanks for the inspiration!
Hi everybody!
Today's lesson is dealing with the style of Mr. Tom Morello. He hit the spotlight in the early 90's with a band called Rage Against the Machine, a band that mixed heavy, extremely groovy music with rap vocals, highly political lyrics and high energy live shows. His way of playing is rather conventional when it came to rhythm guitars, he uses a lot of more or less simple pentatonic riffs, but together with his band mates he plays them very tight and they have an incredible groove. I always loved this way of playing, simple, but incredibly effective and powerful!
When it comes to his leads he uses a very different approach, he is no big shredder or a guitar hero in the conventional way, he uses his guitar to create completely new sounds, sometimes it is really hard to believe that his parts were actually played by a guitar, that's why he keeps mentioning that all sounds on his albums were created by guitar, drums, bass and vocals only, no keyboards ;-)
For this lesson I was inspired by a song called "The Worm" from Audislave, his follow up band after Rage Against the Machine broke up. (Actually Audislave is nothing else but Rage against the Machine with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell on vocals) The riffs are those typical simple power riffs, based on pentatonic licks, and I tried to keep a kind of song structure here, with a main theme part, a verse part, a kind of chorus part, and a solo over the main theme part in the end. For the solo I tried to create something that sounds like Morello without using all of my effects here, it would not really make sense to do something that most of you can't really reproduce, so I only used a wah, some reverb and a bit of delay for the lead part.
Have fun practicing this one, and feel free to record some own variations of the solo, I would like to hear how you guys try to get close to Tom's freaky tone.
Cheers
Marcus
