In this lesson I will show you how to efficiently combine mixolydian mode with other scales. We are going to switch from mixolydian mode to minor pentatonic and blues scales. We are also going to work on repetition.
First of all, I'd like you to pay more attention to vibrato and string bending. This is a pretty slow solo, with long, sustained notes, especially the first part, so you have to have a great control over your tone in order to sound good.
You've probably noticed that I repeated the melody line twice in the first part of the solo. It's a great thing you can always use and it's called repetition. Sometimes, if you have enough space in your solo, if it's long enough, it's better to come up with a melody and repeat it, instead of just soloing. It doesn't really have to be a melody, you can just come up with a simple phrase and repeat it a couple of times, maybe change it a bit, not to sound boring.
Another thing would be switching from mixolydian mode to pentatonics. The first part was played using mixolydian mode, but in the second part I started playing pentatonics, actually blues scale, to make it sound more interesting. It changes the sound dramatically! It's a great trick you can always use when you are playing in the mixolydian mode. But you don't really have to use it only in your solos. In the spoken video, I made a "short" speech on how you can use the same thing it in the context of a whole song. You can actually create a pretty interesting sounding tune!
