I see what you mean, the whammy def does have have some non-subtle metal vibes to it when used like in this lesson.
Have you checked out Michael Lee Firkins? He uses a floyd style tremolo really tastefully in a blues/country fusion setting.

Whammy is the best bar you will ever find - so let's abuse it! ;)
In this lesson I rely heavily on the whammy bar to set the atmosphere. I use it for both tasty vibrato and to bring out aggressive artificial harmonics.
Tonality:
B minor
Tempo:
90 bpm
Slow videos recorded at 90 bpm & 70 bpm
Time Signature:
Starts out in 4/4, then 5/4
Tabs:
It seems the Guitar Pro software was not able cope with this type of whammy abuse (?), so instead of exporting ASCII tabs I used images in this lesson. Looks better to me!

Ibanez RG652-AHM with Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday pickups.

I used only the included plugins in Logic Pro, see my settings below.
There is also aggressive noise gating going on - which is why you can hear some "ghost" notes when I am not playing.
