Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Pick and Strum Country Rhythm by Chris Shofner

Here is the best take from this week after 3 weeks of working on this. I know there are quite a few mistakes but I wanted to get this one out there for some help. I seem to be able to get either the picking right or the muting or the rhythm but not all in one take. I’ve looked at my pick hand and my posture and even how relaxed I am. I’d be suprised to pass on this take but please be honest and critical. Thanks!

Very cool to see you cover this lesson!

First - your groove here is great! This is often what comes last for many student - but to me you are really 'in the pocket'. Well done!

You do lack Chris' attack though - and your playing conveys a much softer feel than his. I would say the aggressiveness is important for the genre so do work more on the aggressive palm muted picking.

Furthermore, the further into the lesson you play - the more mistakes we hear. So you need to spend more time on this - perhaps break the whole thing up in sections and practice them separately.

I have a memory of you presenting yourself as a beginner? If so - this take is spectacular!

You get a 5 from me - keep up the good work.

Hey there!
First of all very cool choice of lesson smile.gif Country stuff always makes smile on my face smile.gif

There's is not need to go into details with this take because things are quite general thourgh most of it. There is a timing problem caused by a pick "stucking" between strings. You're behind the beat most of the time and it sound like sort of slap back echo. Playing this kind of country runs requires huge precissio nin string skipping. You also need to make your guitar sound more sparkling...not with your amp but with your right hand. Try to experiments with different picks...want that "sporing "country sound? Need rather a thin pick. Also try to no play each note with same strength.. In country main accents are usually on 2 and 4...(snare beats) try to martch these two with the backing track and your timing should get better. Nice work!

Hi Shane,

This is not as far as it seems but it definitely needs more work to polish the rhythm and cleannes of the different parts. The best way to be able to think on different elements in paralell (until they become automatic) is to practice at slower tempo, and also on smaller sections as Kris said. This will allow you to focus on more than one element at a time. Try it and you'll see. Then, you can increase tempo gradually and things will continue happening but you won't have to think on everything. It's just a matter of time.

Keep on the hard work, your playing is showing imprortant progress, congrats!
